Top Life Sciences Stocks To Own Right Now

With the Federal Reserve standing pat this week, the S&P 500 index has reached another all-time high.

Yet this bull market is proving to be even more fertile for investors in small-cap and micro-cap stocks. Both the iShares Russell Microcap Index and the Russell 2000 Small Cap Index are outperforming the S&P 500 by a solid margin over the past two years.

With no end in sight to the bull market, there's no reason to stop focusing on these small companies at this juncture. If the economy can manage to build a head of steam in 2014 and 2015, then these small stocks should see even deeper investor interest.

Here are three stocks that all trade below $5 and sport market values below $500 million -- and are poised for solid upside if this rally continues.

1. Lionbridge Technologies (Nasdaq: LIOX) I took note of heavy insider buying at this language translation services firm back in July, and though shares are up nearly 10% since then, the company's outlook has brightened markedly.

On the second-quarter conference call, management delivered its most upbeat discussion of business trends in several years, noting that Lionbridge is seeing an expansion in its relationship with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), the return of several other large tech clients that had dropped off in the past few years, and a rising order book with manufacturing and life sciences clients.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Who will rule the sky?
Boeing and Airbus have been rivals for some time, with both companies attempting to dominate the mini-jumbo market. The A350-1000 has had slow sales to start, but ir recently took a swing at Boeing's 777's thanks to an $6 billion order from longtime Boeing customer British Airways. More importantly, this order marked a upward tick in sales as Air Lease (NYSE: AL  ) also purchased five A350-1000s, and other airlines have starting to show interest in doing the same. Considering Airbus markets the A350-1000 as a 777 replacement, I'm guessing Boeing is feeling a little bruised.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Boeing also announced a new, larger version of the Dreamliner at the Paris Air Show last month. Initial orders have already rolled in from several airlines -- United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) signed up to buy 20 of the new birds, and Air Lease (NYSE: AL  ) and Singapore Airlines both plunked down a big order for 30 of the larger Dreamliners apiece. The updated 787-10 Dreamliner attacks the Airbus A350's target market, and is expected to offer better fuel efficiency than the comparable Airbus jet. However, EasyJet decided to go with Boeing's rival, placing a massive order for 135 planes from Airbus, 100 of which will be A320neos.

Shares of Air Lease Corp. (AL), an aircraft leasing company, were up in the first quarter on reports of strong sales and earnings in the fourth quarter. Air Lease offers a young, fuel-efficient fleet to satisfy strong demand for replacement of older aircraft and more lift capacity in emerging markets, particularly Asia. The company has secured an investment grade rating to keep financing costs low and as part of a $27 billion order book, has placed all deliveries through 2015.We believe Air Lease is well positioned for a long "runway" of profitable growth. What little the world knows about Apple's concrete plans comes mostly from Apple and its hardware partners. Apple released schematics for what third-party iOS controllers should look like (which also revealed that OS X might get in on the fun). Companies such as Logitech (LOGI), ClamCase and Moga followed suit, and they have been teasing their upcoming products since September. And updates to a handful of existing iOS games have included bits about supporting "Made for iPhone" controllers in their release logs.
