Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Own For 2014

With a busy earnings season about to kick off, now is a great time to review your portfolio holdings and consider some potential moves.

Some New Recommendations to Consider

Just this morning, we upgraded five new high-yield stocks toour industry-leading Best Dividend Stocks list. The full details surrounding the upgrades are available here (you’ll need to log into your Premium account to see them), but I’ll share with you the mindset behind these big moves:

The markets are in dire need of a pullback, but we found some names that are actually a bit undervalued. Raising the average yield within your portfolio is a good idea right now. Several of our new picks yield 5% or more. The MLP space is looking attractive again – high yields and relatively low valuations. We have another group of potential upgrades we’re considering as well, we’re just waiting on some better visibility, which we expect to get when these companiesreport earnings this month. Time to Ring the Register?

An old saying on Wall Street goes “Sell when you can, not when you have to.” I believe this bit of wisdom applies perfectly to today’s markets.

The other stock the firm likes is Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR). The company shares have lost about 4.6% since reporting an earnings per share (EPS) miss for the third quarter and the Sterne Agee analysts see the lower price as a reat entry pointfor buying the stock. Dollar Tree raised fiscal year 2013 EPS guidance from a range of $2.66 to $2.77 to a new range of $2.72 to $2.78, effectively raising the mid-point by $0.04. The dollar store operator at the center of a takeover bidding battle between two rival chains on Thursday reported fiscal 2015 first quarter earnings that were nearly cut in half as new pricing policies took effect. As Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) continues struggling to turn around its operations, the subpar performance raises a legitimate question: Just what do Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) and Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) continue see in the chain that makes them think it's so valuable?

  • [By Jacob Roche]

With the economy starting to improve, you might think Dollar Tree's (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) fortunes will reverse. The deep discounter provided unemployed and lower-income consumers a safe place in the storm, but with the economic weather clearing up, it would be reasonable to expect consumers to venture out again to higher-end retailers. However, that assumption would be wrong.

Advisors' Opinion:

The same can't be said of another big loser on the Dow, industrial giant Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . This stock has been hammered over the course of 2013, and shares are down a further 1.7% today. China's slowdown has crippled Caterpillar's fortunes, and the country's disappointing GDP report showing only 7.7% growth in the first quarter didn't help the company's outlook.

  • [By Charley Blaine]

The week's earnings and economic events may not provide the fuel for a big rebound. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) reported better-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter, even if sales were sluggish. There's Apple's earnings ahead and the Fed meeting, starting Tuesday. Most analysts see the Fed continuing to reduce its bond buying.
